In the 1840s, fossil hunter Mary Anning supports herself by collecting specimens along the Dorset coast and selling them to visitors. A wealthy customer asks her to look after his wife, Charlotte, who is recovering from illness and has little interest in the arrangement. Repeated walks, collecting trips and hours spent working in the same rooms gradually change the terms of their acquaintance.
