In 1988, Jean teaches physical education in Tyneside and keeps her work life separate from the lesbian bar, friends and partner she sees outside school. Public debate around the proposed law that became Section 28 increases the risk attached to being known as a lesbian teacher. When a student begins appearing in both parts of Jean’s life, the separation she has relied on becomes difficult to maintain.
