Therese Belivet is working at a Manhattan department store when she meets Carol Aird, a customer in the middle of a separation and custody dispute. A pair of gloves left at the counter gives Therese a reason to contact her, and the women begin meeting away from the store. Their relationship develops as Carol’s marriage places legal and practical limits on privacy, while Therese starts making decisions about work, travel and what she wants from her own life.
