In 1959, university professor Vivian Bell travels to Reno and stays at a ranch while completing the residency required for a divorce. There she meets Cay Rivvers, a younger woman who works at a casino and makes her interest in Vivian clear. As Vivian waits for the legal process to finish, their meetings move from the ranch into the city and begin to change what she expects life after marriage to look like.
