A group of Canadian lesbians describe the bars, relationships, jobs and forms of secrecy that shaped their lives from the 1940s through the 1960s. Their interviews are placed beside archival material and scenes that imitate the lesbian pulp novels many of them read. The documentary follows how women found one another before legal and social recognition, and how popular fiction both reflected and distorted those possibilities.
