Evelyn Couch is dissatisfied with her life when she begins visiting Ninny Threadgoode at a nursing home. Ninny tells her about Idgie and Ruth, two women whose lives became closely connected around a café in Depression-era Alabama. As Evelyn returns for more of the story, the past offers her a way to reconsider the marriage, habits and expectations that have made her feel absent from her own life.
