After a suicide attempt, Susanna Kaysen enters a psychiatric hospital where she is expected to accept a diagnosis and a course of treatment. She becomes close to several patients, including Lisa, whose resistance to the institution attracts and unsettles her. Hospital routines, friendships and conflicts force Susanna to decide how she understands the crisis that brought her there and what kind of life she wants outside.
