In 1950s Christchurch, Pauline Parker meets Juliet Hulme at school and the two girls form an intense friendship. They create a shared fantasy world, write stories and begin treating time apart as a threat to the life they have built together. When their families decide to separate them, the girls start making plans to prevent the decision from taking effect.
