In eighteenth-century Brittany, painter Marianne is hired to make a wedding portrait of Héloïse, who has refused to pose for previous artists. Marianne must study her during walks and paint in secret, pretending to be a companion rather than explaining the commission. As the women become aware of each other’s attention, the portrait and the marriage it is meant to support place a limit on the time they have together.
