During the Second World War, writer Alice Lamb is required to take in Frank, a boy evacuated from London to the English coast. She expects the arrangement to be temporary, but caring for him brings back memories of Vera, the woman she once planned a life with. As Alice and Frank learn more about each other, the present begins to connect with a relationship she has kept apart from the rest of the village.
