Conductor Lydia Tár is preparing a Berlin orchestra for a performance of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony while managing rehearsals, teaching, interviews and appointments within the classical-music world. Questions begin to emerge about a former student and about the way Lydia uses access, recommendation and professional authority. As those questions move closer to her work and home life, she tries to control the account of events with the same precision she expects from the orchestra.
