In 1920s England, Virginia Woolf begins writing Mrs Dalloway. In 1950s Los Angeles, Laura Brown reads the novel while preparing a birthday for her husband, and in contemporary New York, Clarissa Vaughan organises a party for a close friend. Each story unfolds over a day, with the book connecting three women who are making decisions about care, obligation and the lives expected of them.
