Cheryl works at a Philadelphia video store and begins making a documentary about a Black actress credited only as the Watermelon Woman in a 1930s film. Her search takes her through libraries, personal collections and interviews with people who offer conflicting accounts. While beginning a relationship with a white customer, Cheryl also has to decide how her own position behind the camera shapes the history she is trying to recover.
