In the 1850s, Abigail lives on a farm in the American Northeast and records the work, weather and losses of married life in a journal. She meets Tallie, a new neighbour whose visits provide conversation and attention missing from both households. Their relationship develops between farm duties and the supervision of their husbands, making time together dependent on distance, weather and opportunity.
